The Best Gift You Can Give Yourself This Holiday Season
Are the lights magically twinkling on your Christmas tree? Can you smell the sweet scents of gingerbread and pine? Is there a fire crackling in your fireplace beneath the stockings?
There are so many wonderful symbols of the season to celebrate and enjoy. But along with all of the hustle and bustle, there are also feelings of stress, overwhelm, loneliness, and despair for far too many people.
You may have felt discouraged at points during 2023, and those feelings are understandable. However, I want to give you a gift this Christmas that I hope will last far into the New Year.
If it feels like everything is a burden, like your business has suffered hardships, or like you have been walking around with a chip on your shoulder lately, I want you to know that sometimes, it’s not about our circumstances. It’s about our attitude.
You can’t always change what you are up against. Whether it’s a global pandemic, bad breaks in your business, or the way you were raised, some things are unfair, plain and simple.
All we can control is the attitude with which we face what we are up against. I’ve seen again and again in my 40+ years in business that it’s not the degree someone holds or the title on their resume that determines their success. It’s their attitude.
If you’re bitter, critical, and disagreeable, it pushes people away. And that can mean that perfectly good business is pushed away too. As Joyce Meyer said, “You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.”
On the other hand, if you approach everyone you meet with kindness, compassion, humility, and a warm smile, your good attitude draws people to you, and opportunities come along with them.
We focus so much on how we look on the outside—what we wear, how we style our hair, and what car we drive—but few among us pay as much attention to what’s on the inside, even though it has an even more important role in how attractive or unattractive we are.
Think about it. When you meet someone who is sour, ungracious, or condescending, you don’t want anything to do with them. Their attitude has made them unattractive. And what’s unfortunate is that no matter how well they dress, they’re still going to wear that bad attitude.
Of course, it’s important to maintain your professionalism and have the right qualifications for what you do, but it’s just as important to keep a good attitude, especially when times are tough.
We can all find reasons to go through life with bitterness and resentment. Bad things happen to everyone. Matthew 5:15 says God makes the “sun rise on the evil and on the good,” and rain falls “on the just and on the unjust.” You get both the sun and the rain. The choice you have is how you respond, no matter what the weather.
It’s a choice you have to make each and every day to stay positive. It might only take a few small adjustments in your attitude to completely change your day. Here are a few ideas:
- Start your day each morning with gratitude. Remember that you are thankful for the new day, for the opportunity to work and achieve, for the chance to hug your loved ones and tell them how you feel about them.
- Let go of old failures or things that didn’t go well, rather than reliving them over and over again. These negative thoughts block us from experiencing the successes, remembering the things that went right, and witnessing the miracles all around us.
- Give yourself a mantra and post it in your office and anywhere else you might see it often to be reminded of maintaining a positive attitude. I like these two: “Life is too short to be anything but positive,” and “I refuse to go through life with a bad attitude.”
Remember, by choosing a friendly, considerate, humble, and positive attitude, you’ll not only enjoy life more from day to day, but you’ll also go further in life.
