Your End-of-Year Checklist for Success

Your End-of-Year ChecklistWith less than two weeks left in 2024, we are all feeling the urgency of finishing up the year strong. Plus, I know you and your team are eager to take time off and focus on celebrating the holidays with loved ones.

But before you put up your out-of-office message, there are a few loose ends a conscientious entrepreneur should tie up to ensure an easy reentry in January.

Today, I’m sharing my last minute, end-of-year checklist to help you conclude 2024 on a high note and begin your new year smoothly. Consider it a holiday gift from me to you, my dear readers! Here are five items to take care of before logging off in 2024.

1. Send a year-end message of gratitude to your email list.

Yes, our inboxes are flooded with emails offering holiday discounts, and perhaps you offered a December sale to your clients, too. But the end of the calendar year is also a perfect time to thank your customers for their loyalty.

Remember, consumers have abundant choices these days for how they get their products and services. It is important to let them know how much you appreciate them, at the holidays and always.

Are words not your thing? Consider making a short video expressing your gratitude and share it via email, social media, or both! Even a quick thank you and Happy Holidays text message to your best customers will build your relationship and set you up for continued success in 2025.

2. Communicate any changes in schedule to your clients.

Are you taking time off over the holidays? Be sure to let your customers know how they can reach you, or when you will be in touch again.

We work so hard all year long to build trust with our clients. Building those relationships is important work, and you don’t want to see it go to waste by being unavailable when a client thinks they can reach you.

That doesn’t mean you cannot take time off to recharge and be with your family! Just clearly communicate when you will be away so everyone’s expectations are the same. Share your availability on all your online platforms (your website, social media, Google Business Profile), as well as in person if you are seeing business partners prior to taking time off.

3. Check in with your trusted advisors.

The end of the year is a time when concerns and opportunities can arise from an accounting perspective. If you have not spoken to your accountant or financial advisor already this month, be sure to touch base before you log off for the holidays.

Likewise, if you have any lingering concerns you want to address with other advisors, like attorneys, insurance providers, and bankers, reach out. Even if you cannot get your questions answered before the advisor leaves the office for the holidays, you will put yourself at the top of their to-do list when they return.

4. Thank your team and celebrate your wins!

You don’t need to throw a blowout holiday party to recognize your business’s achievements this year. While those can be great fun, there are plenty of ways to honor the hard work you and your staff put in during 2024.

Perhaps monetary bonuses are not a possibility for your small business, but a thoughtfully-considered gift can mean a lot to your colleagues. Don’t underestimate the value of a handwritten note that acknowledges your gratitude for the many ways they have supported you and your business this year.

Celebrating your wins also means sharing the highlights of your year with your community. You can do that through a series of “Best of 2024” social media posts, or in an email to your distribution list. These wins can include notable numbers from the year (like number of clients served or events offered), a community service project completed, or a new product or service you started offering.

And of course, celebrating your wins means taking the time to reflect on your personal achievements. Congratulate yourself on your successes, and enjoy well-deserved rest. Then come back to work in 2025 with a prosperity mindset, ready and eager to achieve the SMART goals you set for the year!
