The Often Misunderstood Truth of Accomplishing Your Dreams
While all of us want to accomplish our dreams, sometimes we don’t see how it’s possible.
We look around at other people and think, “I don’t have the money, connections, resources, degrees, or experience that they have.”
Maybe you’ve heard the expression, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” and I think that’s true and I also think it’s the thief of dreams, especially when it comes to dreams for your business.
When you compare yourself to other people, you feel like you’re falling behind. Perhaps you have something holding you back – debt, small children undertow, health issues, or your business just isn’t growing as fast as you think it should.
Compared to the people out there who look like they have “made it,” it seems impossible for you to accomplish what they have.
There are a few problems with this mindset. First, you never know what’s really going on with other people. Maybe they look like they’ve made it on the outside, but inside they are miserable with stress. Or the reality of their lives is not what you really want for your own life. Comparing your situation to what you see other people outwardly project is not the whole story.
Secondly, once you’re comparing what you have to what others have, you’re on the road to frustration, self-doubt, and second-guessing. I hope you’ll agree with me that you deserve better than that.
Last but certainly not least, the problem with this mindset is that it ignores a fundamental truth of success. The truth is, you’re one good break away from the success you want.
This is commonly misunderstood, but if you listen to any truthful, successful business person they will tell you that they caught a break somewhere along the way. The pieces fell into place. The stars aligned. The luck of the draw came out in their favor.
You don’t need everything to go right – you just need one lead, one good prospecting call, one promotion, or one right person to come across your path.
You don’t need everyone to like you – you just need the right people to like you.
You don’t need every door to open for you – you just need the right door to open for you.
What seems impossible today will become possible tomorrow, and suddenly, your career will leap light years ahead overnight.
That’s why when something doesn’t work out, it’s important that you keep in mind that what’s supposed to be yours will be yours, but it won’t always look exactly the way you think it will. There’s an old Jewish proverb, “We plan. God laughs.”
Maybe you feel impatient for things to break your way. But I want you to remember this… Think back on how things were in your life 10 years ago – everything you’ve learned, experienced, and all of the wonderful memories you’ve made.
If you suddenly found out every single thing that would happen in those 10 years – all the challenges, all of the hard-fought battles, and all of the blessings ahead of you – it would overwhelm you, wouldn’t it? It would be too much. But slowly, you handled it, you learned, you experienced, and you evolved.
That’s the power of patience. And that’s what you need as you look ahead toward the things that you want in the future.
Not only that, but you’ve also got to prove yourself. You have to put in the time, develop the skills, and demonstrate the perseverance. You’re not falling behind, you’re moving ahead.
As much as you might want to, sometimes you can’t just make things happen. You can’t persuade people who disagree with you, you can’t get your critics to suddenly love you, and you can’t force more business to come your way.
Instead of being upset, know that there’s something better right around the corner. Quit worrying about the opinions of people on social media, gossiping coworkers, or the prospect who you couldn’t convert. They aren’t the path to greatness; they are diversions from the path.
Start focusing your attention on people who have your back.
Live in hope, faith, and confidence that what is supposed to be yours will come to you.
And last but not least, take decisive action toward your dreams each and every day.
