The Fix for Life’s Many Distractions

Do you ever feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day?

As busy entrepreneurs and professionals, it’s easy to have a to do list 3 times longer than you could ever get done in a single day.

Your time is finite. The new year is a reminder of the onward march of time. Your time to work, your time to be with your family and friends, and your time to act in service is limited. And it often feels like you can never put in enough time in any of those areas.

Today, I want to offer you a remedy for the feeling of never having enough time to accomplish what you need to do.

You have big plans for your year. If you’re going to reach your goals, you have to decide that you aren’t going to allow any more distractions.

If you want to fulfill your life’s purpose, you can’t allow yourself to be distracted by all of the things keeping you from greatness.

You know the kinds of distractions I’m referring to:

  • responding to every critique of your business
  • worrying about what other people think of you
  • spending all of your time on social media and calling it “work”
  • fighting other people’s battles for them
  • trying to make people understand you who are determined not to

Quit allowing social media to suck your time away from more important things. Quit hoping people will include you in their group. Quit allowing other people’s advice to run your life and your business. Quit investing your time and talents into trying to win over the unwinnable. And quit trying to get along with the people who can’t get along with themselves, much less anybody else.

There are people who just aren’t going to be happy to see you succeed. They don’t like that you’re doubling your income, or getting more speaking engagements, or launching a new program. That’s not about you, it’s about them. Let them think what they are going to think and say what they are going to say. But don’t let them distract you.

Not everyone is going to hire you or buy your product. Not everyone is going to like the video you shared on Facebook. Not everyone is going to open doors for you professionally. That’s okay. You don’t need them. They’re not the clients or partners you are trying to reach. There’s nothing wrong with them, but they aren’t a part of your story.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to convince a new lead to invest in your business. You absolutely do. What it means is that you can stop trying to convince the inconvincible who was not a quality lead for you in the first place.

Some of us are people pleasers. We want to give everyone 100%. That sounds good, but what do you have left over for accomplishing what’s most important to you if you’re giving your all to everyone else?

Meanwhile, you have a crowd of people cheering you on, celebrating how unique you are, and appreciating what you put out into the world. These are the people to invest your time and energy into. They’ve stuck by your side and you need to stick by their side, which means turning away from distractions.

If people are trying to keep you down when you know you’re destined for bigger things, don’t worry about those people. The right people will see you and realize your value.

The people God has put into your life to help you along your way make their appreciation for you known. They light up when they see you walk into a room. They sign up on day one for your new program. They go out of their way to open doors for you that will grow your business.

If people want to argue with you over every little thing, let them argue. It’s too easy to fight over petty arguments. Not taking the bait is the wise move. Don’t allow them to distract you from your purpose.

Ask yourself: Is this a battle worth fighting, or is it a distraction from your goals?

One of the greatest markers of success is knowing which battles to fight. Next time someone engages you in a battle that’s not worth your time, take it as a compliment. They wouldn’t be trying to drag you down if they didn’t think you’re on your way up. They’re trying to distract you because they see that you’re accomplishing big things.

Remember, you don’t have endless time. Your time is finite, and it’s too important to waste on petty power games or convincing others of your worth. If you can focus and ignore distractions, you’ll find you have far more time to make your dreams a reality.
