3 Easy Ways to Make Networking Work for You

Make networking a regular, intentional part of your routine. No matter your title, organization size, or personality type, one truth remains constant in business: relationships are everything. Whether you thrive in the spotlight or prefer one-on-one conversations, expanding your network is one of the most powerful ways to grow professionally and build your business.

Networking isn’t just about small talk or handing out business cards — it’s about cultivating genuine, mutually-beneficial relationships. It’s the art of connecting with others, sharing value, and positioning yourself as a trusted expert in your field. And it’s not just who you know that counts—it’s who knows you.

I encourage every one of my Celeste Giordano Coaching clients, from seasoned extroverts to more reserved professionals, to make networking a regular, intentional part of their weekly routines. In fact, I’m speaking on this exact topic next week at the American Business Women’s Association – Queen City Chapter meeting, and urge everyone in the greater Cincinnati area to join us on August 5 for this free event (register here!). I’m so passionate about networking because I have seen firsthand how it opens doors to new leads, partnerships, mentorship opportunities, and visibility in your business community.

Still, I know that for many professionals, networking doesn’t always come naturally. Maybe you feel awkward walking into a room full of strangers. Maybe you wonder what to say, or how to make sure the time you invest actually leads to results. The good news? With a few simple strategies, you can make networking work for you.

Step 1: Set Clear Networking Goals

If you want your networking efforts to yield real results, start by setting specific, measurable goals. Just like in any other area of business, goal-setting creates momentum, focus, and accountability.

Before attending your next event, ask yourself:

  • How many new people do I want to introduce myself to?
  • How many business cards or contacts do I want to collect?
  • How many follow-ups (calls, emails, LinkedIn connections) will I commit to in the next 48 hours?

Write your goals down, even just on a small card in your pocket. Review them halfway through the event to refocus, and again afterward to measure your success. Goals turn a simple gathering into a strategic opportunity.

Step 2: Plan Ahead and Pace Yourself

Some people get energized by the buzz of a room full of professionals. Others find it draining. Most of us fall somewhere in between. The key? Know yourself, and plan accordingly.

If you’re attending a full-day conference or busy evening mixer, review the agenda ahead of time. Schedule moments of downtime so you don’t burn out. Find a quiet corner, step outside for fresh air, or simply take five minutes to reset before re-engaging. When you plan your energy just like you plan your calendar, you’ll show up more present, confident, and ready to make meaningful connections.

Step 3: Come Prepared with Conversation Starters

No one likes awkward silences or fumbling for words. Show up with a few conversation starters in your back pocket.

You don’t need a script, just a plan. Try:

  • “Hi, I’m [Your Name]. What brought you to this event?”
  • “Have you been to this group before?”
  • “What kind of work do you do?”
  • “That’s a great bag/shirt/watch — mind if I ask where you got it?”

People appreciate genuine interest. Ask open-ended questions, listen actively, and look for ways to build rapport. And don’t forget to have your own short, clear intro ready—a few key points about your business, who you help, and what makes your work valuable.

Networking Is a Skill — Not a Personality Trait

You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to make powerful connections. In fact, some of the most effective networkers are thoughtful, intentional, and great listeners. The truth is, networking is a learnable skill—one that improves with preparation, practice, and purpose.

I’ve coached business leaders of all types—some shy, some outgoing, and many in between—who have used the strategies I teach to master networking, increase visibility, and ultimately double plus their income.

If networking feels intimidating, I want you to know this: You don’t have to change who you are to succeed—you just need a strategy. At Celeste Giordano Coaching, we equip professionals with the tools to grow in confidence, build authentic relationships, and unlock new levels of success.
