Why Every Entrepreneur Needs a Blog
s brief bio.
Whether you’ve been following me for a few months or several years, you know that I’m a huge proponent of blogging and what it can do for your business. I encourage all of my coaching clients to start their own blog, and this is why:
Benefits of Blogging
There are so many benefits to glean from posting to your blog consistently:
- Building credibility
- Increasing your reach
- Showcasing your expertise
- Growing familiarity, trust and loyalty with your audience, which is integral to the buying process
- Proving to your clients how consistent and reliable you are
- Honing your distinct point of view
- Creating content to share (and be shared) on social media
- Boosting traffic on your website
Despite the fact that there are so many benefits to starting a blog, I’ve found that many entrepreneurs I work with often have a long list of excuses why they don’t want to start a blog, or struggle to get theirs started.
So today, I want to demystify the areas of blogging that many entrepreneurs struggle with, and by doing so, respond to the most common objections and stall tactics, so that you can put your blog to work for you.
1. “I don’t understand SEO. It’s complicated and it seems like it’s always changing.”
Don’t worry about SEO.
Don’t get me wrong. Search engine optimization is important. But it should not hold you back from consistently writing on your blog. Even if you do absolutely nothing to improve your SEO, it’s possible to have a small but loyal blog readership that creates warm leads who are ready to turn into clients from your blog. Once you master writing regularly, then you can turn your attention to boosting your SEO by hiring an expert or doing some research yourself.
2. “It’s a waste of time to blog. Hardly anyone even reads it.”
Write even if you don’t have readers. Building an audience takes time and dedication, but it’s worth it in the long run. Not only are you developing content that can be recycled and repurposed for years to come, but you are also establishing your know, like, and trust factor with your readers that turns them into paying clients. If you write week in and week out, your audience will grow over time.
3. “I never know what to write about.”
Base your blog on questions. If you are unsure of what to write about, think about the questions you get asked on a regular basis by clients, potential clients, and even friends and family. You have developed an expertise on topics that people want to know about. Those topics should be the recurring themes you come back to over and over again in your blog.
Make a list of topics or questions and keep it handy so next time you feel “writer’s block” coming on, you can arm yourself with inspiration.
4. “I don’t have time.”
Make time. I understand that it’s hard for busy entrepreneurs to add another thing to your to do list. But how many hours per week do you spend posting on social media? Is that time turning into new clients? If not, you need a new strategy. Put your time into creating blog content that can be easily shared on social media instead.
5. “I don’t know how to convert a reader of my blog into a paying customer.”
Call your readers to action! Every blog post you write should contain at least one “call to action” (CTA). That action step might be attending an upcoming event, signing up for a webinar, downloading an eBook, or signing up for your newsletter.
The objective is to get a passive reader to become actively engaged with you so you can hold their attention, build a relationship, and continue a conversation that moves you closer to closing the sale.
Smart entrepreneurs and professionals know that there is no shortcut to a lasting Legacy Business. You can pour time and money into all of the latest fads out there, but a blog is a tested and proven marketing strategy that will work for your business.
