Success Is About Connection – Especially Right Now
I’ve had a few people ask me over the last few weeks, “How can I do business in a time like this?”
They might be thinking, there are so many businesses that are hurting right now. It seems wrong to keep turning a profit when so many aren’t.
That’s understandable. Those of you with brick and mortar businesses are required to keep your businesses closed, which presents huge challenges.
But as a business mentor and strategist, I want those of you who are able to operate remotely to know that it’s important to keep doing business. The fact that plenty of companies are operating remotely is what will save our economy. You are a part of the solution!
Don’t feel guilty if you are able to operate when other businesses aren’t. Don’t apologize for selling your goods and services while that’s on hold for others. The mindset should be do what you have to do and be creative to keep doing business because that’s going to help keep our economy moving.
Success is like a river. When you’re connected to people who are more successful than you, their success will flow down to you. Likewise, when you’re connected to people who strive for your level of success, you help enable their success.
Build connection
By focusing on your connections, good things will flow your way. If you can respect, encourage, and appreciate those you have connections to right now, you’ll reap respect, encouragement, and appreciation down the line. It’s going to come back to you.
You’re not in competition with other businesses, so let go of the comparisons. You’re not competing with anyone except yourself.
Instead, focus on connection. There are plenty of creative, connected, and compassionate ways to do business right now.
Here’s how you can connect:
- Attend an online networking event. Better yet, organize your own. Take a look at your contacts and see who you could include. Consistently offer a date and time to hold your event. Decide on a theme or topic and bring a few questions to keep conversation flowing.
- Hold Zoom meetings with clients. Ask about their families and the people who work for them. Show your compassion. If their business is having challenges, see if you can figure out a way to help them get through it. Are there people in your circle you can connect them with who could help them?
- Give potential clients a call. Check on them. See how they are doing. Focus on connection rather than a hard sales pitch right now and you will reap the rewards – if not today then down the line.
- Check in on your colleagues and others in your industry. Have business strategy calls with like-minded colleagues. How could you collaborate to host your own virtual workshop or event?
- Find ways to give back. Lots of businesses are making masks for hospital workers right now. Maybe you can donate a portion of your profits to a local food bank or homeless shelter. Or you could offer that for every sale, you’ll give away one product to those in need.
By becoming a person who focuses on connections with others, you will enjoy more success and you’ll enjoy your success more.
