Sharing Gratitude For Those Who Served
Saturday is Veterans Day here in the United States. Our Canadian neighbors to the north are also honoring their veterans on Saturday, which they call Remembrance Day.
Veterans Day has always held a very special place in my home and my heart. I am proud to say that my husband Mike served in the Air Force for 17 years. My father and several close friends also dedicated years of their lives to bravely serving our country. I couldn’t be prouder of them for their selflessness, courage, and years of dedicated service.
Has someone close to you served in our armed forces?
Without brave individuals like them – as well as many in the generations before them – it’s hard to imagine what the country we love would be like today, but there is no doubt we would be worse off.
Next week, I am thrilled to welcome two accomplished Air Force veterans – Laurel “Buff” Burkel and Haley Yeagley – to my Global Legacy and Wealth Building radio show for an hour-long conversation on Veterans and Entrepreneurship. I do hope you will join us on Tuesday, November 14, at 5:00PM ET, and learn about their inspiring journeys.
A Privilege We Too Easily Forget
This is a topic that, despite our best intentions, many of us make the mistake of taking for granted. We live hectic, fast-paced lives and sometimes it’s challenging to keep our priorities in check.
Because our freedom is a constant in our lives, we often struggle to be conscious of this gift on a day-to-day basis. All we need to do is look to the countries around the world, where freedom and democracy are threatened, to be reminded of the importance of these American values.
Many people go about their days carrying on business as usual. They may notice a Veterans Day-related post on Facebook or watch a short clip from a Veterans Day ceremony on the local news, but other than that, it is given little thought.
It’s not that they don’t recognize the sacrifice made by our veterans. But they often don’t make time to think deeply about the enormous value of the freedom and independence our veterans have gifted to us.
Our freedom is one of our most valuable treasures, both as individuals and as a nation. Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to stop, reflect, and appreciate the many freedoms we are blessed with. Of equal importance, we will remember and pay tribute to those who fought – and continue to fight – to protect these freedoms.
A Time for Personal Introspection
On Veterans Day, I spend time reflecting on these gifts. Have I appreciated them enough? Or have I been taking them for granted?
Today, take the time to express your appreciation to our veterans and their families. Even if you don’t know a veteran personally, you can thank them in your heart and pray for the safety and well being of those currently serving our country, or participate in a local project to help active duty soldiers or veterans in need.
Freedom to Achieve
The freedoms our service members have given us are the beacons of light that allow us to pursue our dreams with passion and purpose. That’s why as Americans and as professionals, we owe a great debt of gratitude to our veterans.
For business men and women, the freedom and independence to pursue our dreams are among the many reasons we give thanks to our veterans. Succeeding as a professional may require incredible discipline, drive, and hard work; but the ability to work hard to reach your goals is a privilege – one we wouldn’t have if our Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines didn’t fight to maintain our freedom. For that, we owe them our lifelong thanks.
The greatest way to show appreciation to our veterans is by taking advantage of the freedom they worked hard or even paid the ultimate price for us to enjoy. What does that look like exactly?
It means capitalizing on the freedom to dream without inhibition and to build and sustain a profitable business. It means waking up each morning ready to seize opportunities. And it means setting goals, implementing proven strategies, and doing the daily actions necessary to make your dreams a reality.
Let Veterans Day be a reminder that we are blessed with the freedom to work hard to achieve our dreams. When you face challenges or road bumps, remember that our veterans fought for your freedom, and that with the right mindset and tools, you can prosper in your career and live the life you dream of living.
