It’s Not About Competition – Success Is About Connection
When you’re around people who are more successful than you, how does it make you feel?
Intimidated? Combative? Jealous?
It’s normal to feel any one of those ways, but just because it’s normal does not mean it is the right way to look at it.
Success is like a river. When you’re connected to people who are more successful than you, their success will flow down to you.
Rather than thinking, “They have what I want,” – whether that’s more money, more power, more clients, a bigger house, or seemingly, more happiness – respect their favor, and that favor will come back to you.
Find Your Inspiration
Are you connected to anyone who has what you want? Those connections are in your life for a reason. And the reason is not to feel intimidated or jealous.
Those people are put in your life to inspire you, challenge you, teach you, and get you to think bigger than you would if you didn’t know them.
On the other hand, are you connected to anyone who does the opposite – accepts mediocrity, limits your potential, drags you down, or hinders your growth?
If you take a look at your business contacts and there’s not a person you aspire to be like, your contact list is too small. It’s time to do some networking. You need to start looking for people who are more successful than you, smarter than you, and wealthier than you.
If you surround yourself with people who think bigger, dream bigger, and believe bigger, you will become bigger. Just by being around them, they’re handing you a roadmap for similar success. What they have in their lives is an indication of what’s to come in yours.
You Reap What You Sow
You know the old expression, “You reap what you sow.” If you sow connections with people who accept mediocrity, you will sow more mediocrity. If you sow connections with Legacy Business owners who are happy and successful, you will sow the foundations of a Legacy Business that allows you to be happy and successful.
Remember, pulling someone else down won’t make you rise higher. If you discredit their successes and say, “Oh she’s just lucky,” or “He got there because of his father,” all you’re going to reap is gossip and disrespect.
There’s another expression, “Jealousy is the thief of joy.” But it’s not just joy that jealousy robs you of, it’s success too.
On the other hand, if you sow respect, encouragement, and honor for those who are further along than you, you’ll reap the same respect, encouragement, and honor down the line. It’s going to come back to you.
Build Connection
You’re not in competition with them, so let go of the intimidation and jealousy. You’re not competing with anyone except yourself.
Instead, focus on connection. You might be one new connection away from the success you’re seeking.
So head out and attend a networking event you’ve never been to before. Take a look at your contacts and see what connections you already have that you aren’t utilizing. And turn your jealousy and intimidation into respect and admiration.
By becoming a person who celebrates others’ success, you will enjoy more success and you’ll enjoy your success more.
