Is Fear Holding You Back? How to Do It Anyway
Do you have any fears that hold you back? Maybe it’s the fear of failure, or fear of the unknown, or fear that you aren’t good enough.
We talked about limiting beliefs a couple of week ago, and fear is the mother of all limiting beliefs.
Maybe you’d like to do something – start a new business, launch a new product, write a book – but you think you’re not as talented as the colleague you look up to, you’re not as good of a leader as another business owner, or you’re afraid people will talk negatively about you.
Do the “what if’s” prevent you from going after what you want? “What if I’m not ready for a career change?” “What if I launch that new product and it’s a bust?” “What if people hate my book – or even worse, no one reads it?”
Well, I’ve got news for you. The fear is never going away.
You can’t wait until you’re no longer afraid. You have to go after your dreams in spite of the fear.
The world needs your talent, your creativity, and your unique style. You can’t just continue to play it safe, holding back your hidden dreams, gifts, and potential. Fear can’t keep you from what you were put on earth to do.
“You can talk yourself out of your dreams, or you can talk yourself into your dreams.” –Joel Osteen
Are you letting fear take the lead?
If the idea of going after your dream is intimidating – it seems like too much work or you don’t think you’re up to the task – all you have to do is take that first step.
That’s all anyone else is doing. When you see successful people taking risks, it’s not that they are fearless. They feel the fear, but they do it anyway.
What you’ll find when you do it anyway is that when problems do arise, just as you start to think, “I can’t do this,” you’ll find a way. You’ll realize you have talents you didn’t even know you have.
You might be thinking, “But what if I fail?” Well, what if you do? You will have learned something through failure, and you can get back up, dust yourself off, and get back to work.
Henry Ford said, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”
Do you fear that you’re not good enough, always comparing yourself to others?
I can assure you that you’ve got gifts and talents that are unique and we need them in the world.
Back in our ancestor’s time, this wasn’t a problem. They lived in small villages and probably only knew a few hundred people over the course of their entire lives. There were no celebrities or business titans in the news for everyday people to compare themselves to. They didn’t have to worry about measuring up to Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. They just had to work as hard as their next door neighbor.
When you think about yourself in those terms, it’s so clear that you are good enough and you do have valuable contributions to make.
Are you afraid of what people will think?
Maybe you discount your dreams because of what other people say (or might say). Don’t let insecurity over whether everyone likes you ruin what you want in life. I’m here to tell you that not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay.
If people talk about you behind your back, they are going to do so whether you pursue your dreams or not. So you might as well go after what you want.
You don’t want to reach a point in your life when it’s too late and you look back and think, “What could I have become if I hadn’t been afraid?”
