Is a Limited Mindset Holding You Back From Greatness?

A set of human hands holding a pair of scissors in the right hand and the words "we can" in the left hand. It appears that the 't has been cut off of the phrase "we can't"Last week, I talked about the critical need to eliminate distractions that keep you from greatness. This week, I want to expand on one important distraction that holds so many of us back: our own mindset.

I was recently inspired by Joel Osteen’s sermon, “A New Mindset.” In it, he asks if our own thinking is limiting our life.

So today I ask you—is a limited mindset keeping YOU from success?

There are many ways we inadvertently place limitations on ourselves. We get stuck in the ruts of our daily routines and simply go through the motions of life. We forget to look beyond the requirements of our day-to-day existence.

Perhaps you feel limited by the circumstances of your life. The way we were raised and the obstacles we encounter on life’s journey may lead us to water down our dreams and lower our expectations.

But I am here to tell you that no circumstance is so great, and no rut is so deep, that you cannot pull yourself out.

You can lift yourself up and embrace a new mindset for 2024.

Listen, I know how hard it is to change someone’s mind—I have spent 40 plus years in sales! But it is truly essential to take the limits off of ourselves and reset our minds for success, in both our businesses and our lives.

I urge you to shake off your limited mindset and adopt the following three mantras.

1. I do not live with excuses.

How often do we lean on the same reasons for our lack of success? It is always possible to point to circumstances beyond our control, both personal and professional.

But too often we allow those circumstances, like missing a sales opportunity or being overlooked for a promotion, to lower our expectations. Those problems might require adaptation on our end, but they are not an excuse to diminish our dreams.

Joel Osteen tells us that we may be limited, but God is unlimited. Do not let your limited thinking prevent you from missing out on new relationships, new opportunities, and new prosperity. Instead of making excuses, have faith in your God-given abilities and give yourself permission to succeed.

2. I refuse to settle for the status quo.

Breaking out of the status quo can be tricky. Sometimes we don’t realize we are stuck in a rut because it is such a comfy rut to be in—who would want to leave?

But examining our routines and going beyond the regular motions of life is an essential part of resetting our minds for success. We must take the limits off of our routines and off of ourselves!

Think about your daily schedule—are there elements that have not changed in months, or even years? We all know how important it is to develop healthy habits. But have you taken the time to reflect on the true nature of your own habits?

Sometimes the daily actions we once considered productive have run the course of their useful life. This is where an unlimited mindset comes into play.

Examine your routine and think critically about each component. Do not be afraid to make changes. By opening our hearts and minds to the possibility of improvement, we also open our awareness to the countless blessings around us.

3. I will not be limited by the people around me.

Sometimes the people around you will try to limit you. And this can come in the form of well-intentioned, good people!

They may say, “We’ve always done things this same way, so why would we change?” It’s your job to respond, kindly but firmly, that you are not letting the status quo set the limits for your life. You may very well find that your limitless mindset will inspire those around you to achievement as well!

Ultimately, our true fulfillment is found not through other people, but through God. As Paul tells us in his letter to the Colossians, “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others.” (Col 3:23) God knows your unlimited potential and is waiting for you to embrace a mindset that will break barriers and achieve your great purpose here on earth.

In his sermon, Joel Osteen says, “Victory starts in our mind…abundance starts in our thinking.” Are you ready to expand your vision and dream big dreams for 2024?
