In Life and in Work, Be Anything but Common
It’s easy to go through life wanting to fit in. Fitting in is the way we are told we’ll succeed in school, have a lot of friends, get the right job, and so on. There’s constant pressure on each of us to be common, and it can come from our families, the media, our schools and workplaces, and our peers.
But I would like to invite you to join me in being uncommon.
I recently listened to a sermon Joel Osteen preached about being uncommon, and I believe this idea has merit for the business world just as it does for the rest of our lives.
You see, you’re not here to be common. You’re not doing what you do to blend in.
If you were okay with average, you wouldn’t be reading this right now. You might be complaining, or you might be criticizing people who seem to get “too big for their britches,” but you wouldn’t be interested in doing anything to keep your standards high.
Other people have a small vision for their impact on the world, for their careers, for their families, or for the organizations they serve. But you’re finding something magnificent to reach for.
Other people are doing the bare minimum. But you’re going above and beyond everyone’s expectations.
Other business owners or coworkers complain about the day-to-day grind. But you can be the one who says what you’re grateful for.
Other people are cutting corners. But you’re doing what’s right, even when no one is looking.
When you make the decision to be uncommon, your results will be uncommon too.
When people tell you, “Oh email marketing is dead,” or “You can’t succeed with advertising on Facebook anymore,” I want you to remember that you are uncommon. You might be seeing an opportunity that the naysayers aren’t seeing.
You might say that the odds are against you. There’s a reason you’re taking the common path in one instance or another. Maybe it’s going to take more work to be uncommon, or more time or money than you can invest right now. Maybe you’ll have to take a stand for what you believe in. But I encourage you to be the salmon swimming upstream.
It’s not easy to be uncommon. Breaking the mold requires uncomfortable action.
Think of the teenager who says to his parents, “Everyone else is doing it. Why do they all get to go to the party and I don’t?” And how do his parents respond? “Well you’re not everyone. We expect more out of you.”
By having uncommon commitment, you’ll be rewarded with greater freedom. By having uncommon passion for your work, you’ll be rewarded with exceptional enthusiasm. By having uncommon discipline, you’ll be rewarded with expansive growth. By having uncommon positivity, you’ll be rewarded with more eagerness from the people around you.
Uncommon commitment brings uncommon success.
Are there areas in which you’re being common? Are you settling or compromising in aspects of your life or your business? I want you to push yourself to identify those areas where you can accomplish more, because I know you’re capable of being uncommon.
