How to Balance Your Business and Caregiving Without Burning Out
Professional life challenges us in countless ways every day. We pour our energy into our work, striving to build a business and a legacy we can be proud of. But behind every success story, there’s often a quiet force of support—the loved ones who lift us up when we stumble, encourage us when we doubt ourselves, and remind us what truly matters.
For many of us, that support begins early in our lives with our parents. As the years go by, however, the roles begin to shift. The people who once cared for us may now need us to care for them.
I know this scenario well because a year ago, I was living it. We will celebrate the one year anniversary of my dear mom’s heavenly homecoming next week. In the months leading up to her passing, her needs were intense. Balancing the demands of running my business with the responsibilities of caring for her certainly felt overwhelming at times; but today, after nearly 12 months to reflect, I can affirm that caregiving can also be one of the most meaningful seasons of life.
Giving the Gift of Time
One of the greatest benefits of entrepreneurship is flexibility—the ability to design your schedule around what matters most. Even when your workload feels heavy, it’s worth remembering that you’re in the driver’s seat.
If your parents are aging, consider how you can use that flexibility to spend more quality time with them. Can you schedule a weekly lunch date, or bring your laptop and work from their home for an afternoon? Maybe you can handle client calls while driving them to appointments or simply make a point to check in each morning on the way to work.
Time is one of the most valuable gifts you can give; unlike money, you can’t earn it back later. The memories you make and the reassurance you provide will mean more to your loved ones than you realize.
Support Their Dignity and Dreams
Just because someone is aging doesn’t mean their dreams and goals have faded. Many older adults still want to stay active, contribute, and find purpose. Supporting them can mean encouraging them to pursue hobbies, volunteer work, or social connections that bring them joy.
My mom, Emily Link, discovered a passion for volunteerism and servant leadership later in her life. Her devotion to her community led to the creation of a shared green space in her hometown of Maynardville, Tennessee; they honored her hard work there in 2023 with the dedication of the Emily Link Gazebo.
It was not always easy for me to make the time to support my mom’s volunteer work, as well as her other hobbies and interests. But it was also a wonderful opportunity for me to repay her for all the ways she supported my goals and aspirations throughout my life.
So I encourage you to ask your aging loved ones questions and show interest in their interests. Be patient when they share stories you’ve heard before—they’re not just recounting memories; they’re reminding you of your shared history and values. The same curiosity and empathy that help you succeed as a business leader can deepen your connection as a caregiver.
Set Boundaries and Clock Out
Caring for aging parents while running a business can easily lead to burnout if you’re not intentional about boundaries. When you visit or call, be present. Resist the urge to constantly check your phone or laptop. Practice active listening.
At the same time, remember that caregiving doesn’t mean sacrificing yourself entirely. Schedule downtime, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from siblings, friends, or community resources. You’ll be a better caregiver, and business professional, when you protect your own energy and mental well-being.
Family Matters More Than Ever
Whether you’re caring for aging parents, supporting your spouse, or raising children, your family is the foundation that keeps you grounded. The lessons of caregiving—patience, compassion, balance, and gratitude—are the same qualities that make a strong business leader.
