Embracing a Fourth Quarter Mentality for the Next 90 Days…and Beyond!
Have you ever watched a football or basketball game and seen a coach raise four fingers when the final quarter of play begins? Here in Georgia, there is a tradition at University of Georgia games: between the third and fourth quarter, a horn sounds and everyone in the stadium lifts four fingers in the air. The crowd is ready to support our Dawgs through the end of the game!
Those coaches, players, and fans are summoning something that entrepreneurs also need to embrace: a fourth quarter mentality. Are you ready to give it your all and support your team through the end of the year, and beyond?
What is a fourth quarter mentality?
If you have ever been in a competitive sports game, then you understand the importance of the fourth quarter. It is your last chance to help your team bring home a victory, and you want to know you left it all on the field. You may win or you may lose, but you are going home knowing you gave it your all.
In business, our fourth quarter is the last 90 days of the year. These last 90 days can go one of two ways: we can mail it in and say, “I’ll wait until next year,” or we can do everything we possibly can to accomplish what we set out to do at the beginning of the year. The latter is what having a fourth quarter mentality is all about.
So what can you do to embrace a fourth quarter mindset?
*Look back at your goals for the year and celebrate what you and your team have accomplished! It is so important to identify and acknowledge each person’s success in order to build the confidence everyone needs to finish strong.
*Make a list of your goals for the last 90 days of the year. Break them down into pieces and create a plan to accomplish them. Visualize how you will celebrate your staff’s achievements.
*Rally your team. Now is not only the time to inspire your staff, but also to connect with your advisors. Have a conversation with your financial advisor, CPA, and/or bookkeeper to ensure you are making smart, informed investments. Talk to your insurance agent and evaluate your coverage. Check in with your business coach and mentors. Make sure you are surrounded by people with four fingers raised high in the air!
*Don’t lose momentum on January 1. Imagine how much more productive you would be if you had a fourth quarter mentality all year long! We want to “leave it all on the field” as entrepreneurs 365 days a year.
We serve our business, our team, and our community best when we lean into hard work and finish each day strong. Are you heading into your fourth quarter with energy and excitement? Or are you putting off today what can be done tomorrow?
