Why Humility Is an Important Ingredient in Your Recipe for Success
You may have seen on social media that I had the honor of being nominated for two Moxie Awards by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. The ceremony is later this summer, but regardless of the outcome, I’m thrilled by what this recognition can do to grow the service work of The Women of Community Impact.
With that said, I would be remiss to take the credit for the nomination myself. I give all of the credit to God. And that’s what I want to talk to you about today.
It’s easy to stay humble when you’re first starting out. Whether it’s starting a new business venture, or you’re fresh out of college, it’s hard to be prideful when you don’t have many accomplishments under your belt.
But as the years go by, small accomplishments turn into bigger ones, you start to get recognized for your efforts, and you become prosperous. It’s all too easy to let pride win out over humility and take the credit for yourself.
After all, you’ve worked hard, you got a good education, and you have not only innate talents but also sharp skills and abilities. And as I say week in and week out, achievement requires combining those elements together with a consistent work ethic.
However, it’s not only your hard work that’s gotten you where you are, or your education, talent, or abilities.
Working hard may have brought you success, but wasn’t it God who made it possible to get out of bed each morning with determination?
Getting a good education may have introduced you to important people in your life, but wasn’t it God who opened those doors for you?
Your unique talent and abilities have allowed you to excel at what you love to do, but wasn’t it God who instilled you with those strengths in the first place?
When you have opportunities, accomplishments, and honors, you’ve got to give God the credit. The higher you go and the more you achieve, the more important it is to stay humble and give the credit where it truly belongs.
“Humility is the true key to success. Successful people lose their way at times. They often embrace and overindulge from the fruits of success. Humility halts this arrogance and self-indulging trap. Humble people share the credit and wealth, remaining focused and hungry to continue the journey of success.” –basketball coach Rick Pitino
It’s an easy trap to take in praise from others and respond, “Yes, look at what I’ve built.” As your pride grows, you feel like you deserve the credit. But the more credit you accept, the less focused you are on the same skills, abilities, opportunities and blessings that have gotten you where you are.
Instead of “look at what I’ve built,” shift the focus to “look at what God has made possible, look at what doors God has opened for me, and look at the amazing people God has put in my life.”
As your accomplishments grow larger, don’t lose sight of God’s small miracles that happen every day. Remain humble in all things – big and small. You got your invoices out on time this month? “It’s because of God’s graciousness.” You grew your email list by 2 new subscribers? “Thank You, God, for Your favor.”
Whether other people are lavishing praise upon you or being critical of you, let their words go. Don’t let praise feed your ego anymore than you let harsh words break you down. Stay humble and deflect praise toward the One who deserves the credit.
Mike and I are blessed with a lovely home, successful businesses, caring and devoted friends and family, and so much more. The more blessings we have received, the more humble praise we give to God.
It was God who led us to make smart business decisions that have allowed us to prosper. It was God who instilled passion and creativity into us to take to our work each day. It was God who blessed us with loving families that gave us roots and wings.
I humbly view these award nominations and the honors and achievements I’ve received over the years through the eye of what God has done in my life and the blessings He continues to bestow upon me.
Are you quick to humbly give God the honor in all things?
