One Secret That Can Change Your Bottom Line & Company Culture

I have a pop quiz for you.

What color is a YIELD sign?

Before I answer this question, I have to credit Brian Biro, a bestselling author and business expert, with opening my eyes to this interesting fact.

The answer to my question is red and white.

If you are among the 95% of people who thought it was yellow, it’s probably because that’s what they looked like more than 30 years ago. Since then, all yield signs have been white with a red outline and writing.

Why do so many of us get this wrong?

We see yield signs as we drive nearly every day, and yet our vision is clouded by all of the other things we are viewing and paying attention to as we drive down the street – the car in front of us, the song on the radio, the act of yielding, and even the clouds in the sky.

These distractions, important as some of them are, keep us from paying close attention to things we’ve gotten so used to seeing like yield signs.

Here’s why I’m sharing this and why it matters for your business…

Yield signs are not the only thing we ignore right in front of us. Often, the most important factors for the success of our businesses come down to simple, proven concepts.

And yet, many business coaches and gurus make it seem as though there’s a complicated, narrow path to achievement that only they can help you with. That’s a great way for them to get clients, but not necessarily the right way for you to do business.

But you know I’m a straight shooter. I tell it like it is to my Celeste Giordano Coaching clients and to you.

If there is one secret weapon that leading companies use to increase revenue, reduce employee turnover, keep employees engaged, and grow customer loyalty, I’m not going to let it be another hiding-in-plain-sight yield sign.

So what is this secret weapon? It’s kindness.

I told you it was simple. And yet, when you look at the success of businesses that employee kindness – businesses like Disney, Chick-fil-A, and Southwest Airlines – you might be surprised to find out that kindness is not just a soft spot, it’s a big part of their solid stock prices and profits.

Kindness can mean the difference between having an outstanding reputation in your industry… and having no reputation at all.

So how do you employ kindness as a secret weapon for your business?

  • Kindness is not just a customer service attribute. Kindness begins at the top and should be a part of every interaction at every level. Each conversation within an organization and outside of it is an opportunity for kindness.
  • Kindness is steeped in gratitude and humility. Come to each conversation with the knowledge that you are no better than anyone else, and you are grateful for the opportunity to do what you do.
  • Kindness means listening. If you’ve ever spoken with the manager of a Chick-fil-A, you know the difference it can make to feel like you’ve been heard. That’s what sets them apart from other fast food chains, and it can set you apart too.
  • Kindness does not play the blame game. Blaming others – or your circumstances – serves no constructive purpose.

The bottom line is kindness works. It makes your workplace one where great people want to be, both as employees and as customers. It’s also the right way to do business.

I work with each member of my Silver Council Program to excel at running businesses guided by strong core values like kindness, a foundation of every Legacy Business.
