As You Enter a New Decade, Is It Time to Say Goodbye?
We’ve been talking the last couple of weeks about mindset, because as we begin a new year and a new decade, it’s essential that we do so with the right frame of mind.
Today, I want to talk about another aspect of a positive attitude, and that is saying goodbye.
We often think of goodbyes as sad, or even things to avoid when possible. But some goodbyes should be welcome. They are a natural part of life and a necessary part of business.
It’s time to say goodbye to the client who disrespects you, the business partner who treated you wrong, the projects that didn’t work out, the prospect that strung you along, and the mistakes you made.
If you’ve been holding on to your feelings of bitterness, disappointment, resentment, or mistrust, it’s time to say goodbye to those too.
In business and in life, everyone faces disappointment now and then. It’s about how you handle the disappointment that matters.
Sometimes, a deal doesn’t go like you planned it. Or a new client you were excited about doesn’t pan out. When your plans don’t go the way you wanted them to, even if it doesn’t make sense to you now, shift your mindset to thinking: it wasn’t meant to be.
Say goodbye to your big plans. Let the door close because you never know what is behind the next door.
“Trust God with not just your successes but also your failures.” –Joel Osteen
Rather than holding a grudge, or walking around with a chip on your shoulder, be at peace with what didn’t go your way.
Say goodbye to the pain in your past and move forward into a new decade without all of that negativity. It doesn’t belong here and you don’t need it.
It’s important that you ask yourself… Do I want to spend this year and this decade in sorrow? In self pity? Focused on all of my failures?
Or do I want to say goodbye to all of that negativity and focus on my success and the positive future God has planned for me instead?
The longer it takes you to say goodbye to negativity, the longer it will take to see positivity in your life.
Don’t bring the pity party into a new decade. It’s time to quit reliving mistakes over and over again. It’s time to end the guilt trip. It’s time to move past the hurtful words. It’s time to stop feeling like a victim. It’s time to quash the anger and resentment. It’s time to finish the story of barely getting by.
It’s also time to say goodbye to the wrong people. Your time is too valuable for people who don’t respect you, don’t treat you right, or don’t lift you up. If you don’t say goodbye to the wrong people, you’ll never meet the right people.
As business owners, we can get stuck in the mode of trying to get people to be in business with us. But remember, you offer something amazing. If people don’t want it, let them go. Say goodbye.
You can’t surround yourself with the same negative people and expect different results.
And you can’t think the same way that hasn’t been working and expect different results. If your big plans haven’t worked out, don’t spend time feeling sorry for yourself, thinking you’re a failure.
Be at peace with it not working out, even if you don’t understand. Say goodbye to the struggle.
It’s in your past. It doesn’t belong in your future.
You cannot become who you were intended to be with a chip on your shoulder.
I want you to think about where you will be when 2020 comes to an end. When the clock strikes midnight on January 1, 2021, where will you be if you hold onto all of that negativity?
And where will you be if you say goodbye to it?
New doors will open for you. New opportunities will come your way. New clients, new partners, and new friends will come into your life and take you in directions you cannot foresee unless you let go of negativity from your past.
