Why Mastery Is the Surprising Key to Referrals
I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: the best marketing tool you can utilize for your business is referrals.
Referrals will save you time, energy, and money in the quest for more clients because instead of going in search of them, they come to you with a positive impression built right in.
With that said, getting referrals can be tricky. Clients often come to me saying, “I’ve tried asking existing clients for referrals, but I feel like I’m barking up the wrong tree, pestering them for something they never get around to doing.”
Have you had a similar experience hoping for referrals but never getting them?
If so, I want to let you in on one concept that’s going to make it easier to get referrals. And not only that, but the quality of the referrals you get will be better.
First, let’s talk about the standard reasons why you’re not getting referrals.
Some business coaches will tell you getting referrals is a numbers game. If you have plenty of happy clients, you’ll get enough referrals, they say.
I’m here to tell you they are wrong. There are plenty of successful businesses with small client bases that run on referrals alone. Depending on the type of business and clients you have, a long list of clients may or may not be necessary.
Likewise, some believe a strong, remarkable brand is the key to referrals. While I agree that having remarkable qualities that set your company apart is essential to getting referrals, that’s not enough in and of itself. There are plenty of remarkable businesses out there that are desperate for good referrals.
So if those aren’t the true keys to referrals, what is?
To find out, think about the last time you gave a friend or colleague a referral. How did it make you feel?
Chances are, it made you feel helpful, but it’s not just altruism that motivates us to give referrals. It’s also a self esteem boost.
When you give a referral, you look like an expert on the topic at hand. You want to come across as connected and knowledgeable to the person you’re giving the referral to.
And so it’s essential that the referral you give is a master at what they do.
That’s why when you’re seeking referrals, mastery is the surprising key that many professionals overlook.
What does mastery mean when it comes to the way you do business?
- You have a clear, strong, consistent focus on your area of expertise. That way, clients recommending you can tell others exactly what you do and how you do it.
- You have a proven track record of excellence in your industry. As a result, people will be proud to refer others to you.
- You have a passion for what you do. Because of the fire lit within you, you are never satisfied with your level of expertise, always learning more, and others pick up on that when you talk about what you do.
- Your business marketing instills trust in your customers and potential customers. People who refer you won’t come to regret it.
So how do you build mastery if you don’t already have it?
First of all, mastery is something that comes with the investment of time. If you’re new to what you do, you haven’t achieved mastery yet.
But with that said, mastery can be built over time with a self-disciplined commitment to hard work, a strong sense of integrity in everything you do, persistence in the face of adversity, laser-focused direction on your goals, and decisive action.
Don’t settle for mediocrity. Strive for mastery, and your business will start to get the referrals that up until now, you’ve asked for but haven’t received.
Do you need more referrals because you’re not getting enough quality leads? Or perhaps you have plenty of leads, but you’re not closing sales?
