They may be born with greater natural ability and the right physique for their sport, but no one is a natural Olympian.

There’s nothing “natural” about it!

Without exception, every Olympian has trained tirelessly to perfect their sport. They have set goals and milestones. They have woken up before dawn and maintained vigorous training regimens. They have sought out the best possible trainers and mentors. They have worked to overcome obstacles and recover from injuries. And they have poured blood, sweat and tears into their effort to achieve greatness.

The same holds true for success in business.

No one is born the CEO of a Legacy Business.

Sure, some people inherit wealth and positions of importance. But becoming a leader at the forefront of a profitable, sustainable and growing business is a process. It requires you to take ACTION and develop the skills and mindsets necessary to achieve success.

Many people dream of attaining the independence and success that can come with entrepreneurship, but they maintain their traditional 9 to 5 jobs out of fear that they don’t have what it takes to “make it”.

I am a strong believer that who you are today does not have to be who you are 10 years, 5 years or even a year from now.

No one is born successful, but we are all capable of achieving success.

Like an athlete becomes an Olympian, if you want to create a new profitable business or take your existing business to the next level, you need to develop the qualities that multi-millionaire entrepreneurs have developed before you.

1) Master of Self-Discipline.

There are perhaps no greater examples of self-discipline than Olympic athletes. Becoming an All Star athlete requires tremendous dedication. Athletes understand the importance of taking action daily in order to see long term results. Every area of their lives requires incredible self-discipline – their regimented diets, their grueling training routines, their strict sleep schedules and more. Maintaining the drive necessary to performing their daily disciplines for years and even decades is the key to unlocking their greatness.

Similarly, successful entrepreneurs understand that completing concrete daily actions or “disciples” consistently is the key to unlocking success in business. That means making a set number of complimentary sales calls a day without fail, sending out a newsletter to your mailing list every other week, and attending networking events each week. The actions you must commit to will vary based on your unique business goals, but becoming a master of self-discipline will empower you to bridge the gap between goals and accomplishment.

2) Master of Persistence.

Like all athletes, Olympians encounter obstacles. They get out shined by their competitors. They sustain devastating injuries. They struggle to get the funding and sponsorship they need to train and compete. Part of what makes them Olympians is their ability to persevere through these obstacles on the road to success.

Succeeding in business, and indeed all areas of life, requires being persistent when things don’t go according to plan. Because obstacles are inevitable, if you call it quits whenever you struggle or experience failure in your business, you’ll never work your business long enough to achieve growth and profitability.

When it feels like everything is going wrong, it’s easy to become discouraged. But the most successful business entrepreneurs find the will within themselves to stay the course. Rather than getting sucked into disappointment and self-doubt when challenges arise, they keep pushing and refuse to give up.

If you want to grow a Legacy Business, you can’t afford to be short sighted. Some of the most successful entrepreneurs have experienced the most stunning failures and disappointments, from losing their top clients to struggling to pay the rent. By seeing the failures and struggles for what they are – normal, expected parts of the journey to success – they were able to shift their focus and energy toward creative problem-solving. The more you persevere in the face of adversity, the greater opportunities for success you create.

3) Master of Direction.

Competing in the Olympic Games is certainly an impressive goal. Striving to win a medal is an even loftier goal. And aiming for gold is the pinnacle of human achievement. But Olympians have the courage to set these goals and craft specific action plans designed to bring them to fruition. No one wins an Olympic gold medal in a vacuum. This great feat is the product of working toward a clear goal with unwavering commitment day in and day out for many years.
