4 Ways to Adopt a Fourth Quarter Mindset

Dig deep. Push hard. Finish strong.Have you ever noticed how runners seem to find another gear when the finish line finally comes into view? After miles of steady pacing, fatigue, and even doubt, something shifts in that final stretch of a marathon. The crowd gets louder, adrenaline kicks in, and every ounce of determination is channeled into those last steps.

That relentless drive to finish strong isn’t just for athletes—it’s a mindset professionals need to adopt, too. In business, the final 90 days of the year are our “fourth quarter,” and they can determine whether we simply coast across the finish line or push ourselves to achieve what we set out to do.

With the fourth quarter less than two weeks away, now is the time to look ourselves in the mirror and ask: am I ready to dig deep, summon my energy, and give it my all as the year winds down?

What is a fourth quarter mentality?

If you have ever been in a competitive sports game, then you understand the importance of the fourth quarter. It is your last chance to help your team bring home a victory, and you want to know you left it all on the field. You may win or you may lose, but you are going home knowing you gave it everything you had.

In business, these last 90 days can go one of two ways: we can mail it in and say, “I’ll wait until next year,” or we can do everything we possibly can to accomplish what we set out to do at the beginning of the year. The latter is what having a fourth quarter mentality is all about.

So what can you do to embrace a fourth quarter mindset?

  1. Look back at your goals for the year and celebrate what you and your team have accomplished! It is so important to identify and acknowledge each person’s success in order to build the confidence everyone needs to finish strong.  Even the small victories matter—they are proof of steady progress and momentum. When people feel seen and appreciated, they are more likely to give their very best effort in the final stretch.

  2. Make a list of your goals for the last 90 days of the year. Break them down into pieces and create a plan to accomplish them. Visualize how you will celebrate your staff’s achievements. Having clear, measurable goals gives your team something to aim for, and celebrating progress along the way keeps motivation high. Think of each milestone as a checkpoint on the road to the finish line.

  3. Rally your team. Now is not only the time to inspire your staff, but also to connect with your advisors. Have a conversation with your financial planner, CPA, and/or bookkeeper to ensure you are making smart, informed decisions. Talk to your insurance agent and evaluate your coverage. Check in with your business coach and mentors. A united team and trusted advisors can provide both the encouragement and accountability you need to stay on track when it matters most.

  4. Don’t lose momentum on January 1. Imagine how much more productive you would be if you had a fourth quarter mentality all year long! We want to “leave it all on the field” as entrepreneurs 365 days a year. The habits and discipline you build in these last 90 days can carry over into the new year, giving you a head start while others are still setting resolutions.

We serve our business, our team, and our community best when we lean into hard work and finish each day strong. Just like a marathon runner powering through those final steps, the way we close out the year matters as much as how we began it. Are you heading into your fourth quarter with energy and determination, or are you letting fatigue slow you down?
